William Jessup baseball holds opening day at McBean
The William Jessup University baseball team will make McBean Stadium at McBean Park its official home Jan. 21.
The Warriors will kick off their season with a pregame celebration capped by a doubleheader against Corban University, Salem, Ore.
WJU, the city of Lincoln and Placer Valley Tourism joined forces in 2015 to renovate and revitalize McBean Park’s baseball stadium. The three entities partnered to make a significant financial contribution to the project.
The improvements include irrigation, a natural-grass outfield, a synthetic turf infield, fencing, dugout extensions, scoreboard and nylon netting to replace the chain-link backstop.
The tailgate-style celebration will begin at 9 a.m. and feature a fun kids-zone, barbecue, and more. The gates open at 10 and the first game begins 11:05.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to see that first pitch at McBean Park," said Lance Von Vogt, WJU Athletic Director. "The excitement on campus and in the community is palpable; I mean you can really feel it."
Von Vogt said Warriors head coach Mike Hankins and his team have been putting in the work to build a strong foundation. The goal is to make William Jessup a nationally-recognized collegiate baseball program.
"Baseball has a long history in Lincoln," stated Matt Brower, Lincoln City Manager. "Jan. 21, 2017 will mark the return of this great tradition to downtown Lincoln."
