Whitney runs to victory in league championship
Although Rocklin High’s boys held an edge running 5,000-meter cross-country events, Whitney High teamed up to take the 5k Sierra Foothill League title in last week’s race at Springview-Johnson Park for both boys and girls.
The Wildcats’ boys team scored 29 points to win by 33 over the Thunder. Leading the pack was Austin Vasquez, coming in with a time of 15:40.4 for second place. Vasquez trailed winner Brayden McLaughlin of Del Oro by just eight seconds.
Ethan Dodge put a stamp on third place by edging out Rocklin’s Trevor Asbury by a second. Dodge came across the finish line in 15:46.2.
The ‘Cats’ Bennett Woodward (5th, 15:49.4) nosed out the Thunder’s Shane Burton (6th, 15:55.1) and Brendan Dowling (7th, 16:00.2).
Filling out Whitney’s top five were Ajani Salcido (9th, 16:25.5) and Jason Finta (10th, 16:34.8). The Wildcats average time was 16:03.3 and finished with a range of less than 55 seconds.
Other than Del Oro, Folsom was the only other school to have a runner finish in the top 10.
Whitney’s girls dominated as well, beating out Oak Ridge 37-63.
Although Del Oro’s Riley Chamberlain (18:17.5) ran away from the pack, she had no support. The ‘Cats’ top five finished third, sixth, eighth, ninth and 11th, with a range of just 34.6 seconds.
Grace Lathrop led the maroon and gold in a time of 19:09, just a second and a half behind the No. 2 runner. Rocklin and Whitney then ran tandem for the next four places.
The Thunder’s Pearl Burton (19:27) was fifth and Annalise Gonzales (19:34.3) seventh, and the Wildcats’ Brooke Giorgi (19:32.3) was sixth and Kirsten Ransford (19:39.8) was eighth.
From there, Whitney’s Natalie Eppler (19:41.8), Grace Pierce (19:46.6) and Jessica Becker (20.06) came in ninth, 11th and 14th respectively.
Making up Rocklin’s final five were Alexis Barone (23rd, 20:46.6), Jessica Bullock (35th, 22:10.6) and Nayana Singh (36th, (22:17.2).
Next up, subsections Saturday at Frogtown, Angels Camp.
