Rocklin High School Athletic Director Ryan Spears announced football head coach Greg Benzel’s decision to step away from football after 19 years of guiding the Thunder to three section finals, a section championship and a trip to the state finals.

Rocklin High Principal and former athletic director Davis Stewart gave a sincere thanks to Benzel for his years of service, calling Benzel’s legacy one of unity, passion and character.

“Coach Benzel's decision to step away as the Rocklin High School Head Football Coach is tremendous loss for our football and athletic program. The level of integrity and character that Coach Benzel has brought is second to none and his absence will be surely missed,” Stewart wrote. “Moving forward, Coach Benzel has left the RHS football program with a solid foundation that is primed for success. Words alone cannot express our gratitude for his years of service.”

In an email, Benzel said his decision came when his wife, Julliane, made her decision to run for national public office. Benzel said he would now put his full time and effort in support of Julliane Benzel’s campaign.

Rocklin High has begun an extensive search to find a replacement for Benzel.
