Assistance League promoting literacy

-A +A
Annually in the fall, since 1999, Assistance League of Greater Placer has provided third-grade students with a free personal dictionary to promote literacy by increasing word skills and finishing homework assignments. Last year Assistance League delivered 3,687 children’s dictionaries to third-grade students. Through California State and Placer County Office of Education, certain schools identified within the economically disadvantaged guidelines are chosen yearly to be recipients of the Assistance League’s “Books of My Own” program. Schools are assigned Assistance League member liaisons who work with them to implement delivery. Liaisons make arrangements with classroom teachers to personally present all third-grade students with his/her dictionary. Last year 32 school liaisons distributed dictionaries to 44 schools in the greater Placer County communities and the Georgetown Divide. ~Staff report
