BOYS BASKETBALL After a gigantic win and two tough losses, the Whitney High School varsity boys basketball team is looking forward to the week ahead. The Wildcats (1-2 Capital Athletic League, 14-6 overall) begin the week with a game at home and end the week with a road game. Whitney hosts Cordova (0-2 CAL, 9-8 overall) on Jan. 26. The Wildcats are now averaging 52.4 points per game. Senior forward Evan Orrick (14.5 ppg) is Whitney’s leading scorer, just ahead of senior guard Sean Smith (11.3 ppg) and junior Nolan Eger (10.7 ppg). The Wildcats’ second game of the week is at Antelope (2-0 CAL, 18-1 overall) on Jan. 31. Averaging 65.5 ppg, the Titans present a lot of problems for Whitney. Junior Gabe Bealer (16.3 ppg), Isaiah Ellis (12.7 ppg) and senior Caleb King (11.3 ppg) are the Titans go-to guys when they need a big basket. Whitney has to keep an eye on them. Defensively, Ellis, a 6-6 junior, is averaging seven blocks per game. Whitney might not end the week undefeated, but the Wildcats should still be at .500 in the CAL by the end of the week. The Wildcats hope to get back on their game in the upcoming week. Whitney (1-2 CAL, 6-13 overall) has a doable schedule with one home game and one road game. The Wildcats begin the week at home against Antelope (2-1 CAL, 13-5 overall). Whitney has two players who average double figures in points, senior guard Alex Rodriguez (17.9 ppg and 6.4 rpg) and junior point guard Kristin Ladas (11.1 ppg, 2.6 apg and 2.6 spg). Junior forward Masirah Holmes (7.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 2.4 bpg) could also be a key player in the game for Whitney. The Wildcats must defend senior forward Ashley Hawkins (16.6 ppg and 8.6 rpg) and junior Tyler Ellis (12.9 ppg and 15.4 rpg) if they are going to pull off the win. Whitney will then travel to Mira Loma (0-3 CAL, 1-13 overall) to face a Matadors team that is struggling. Mira Loma is only averaging 28.9 ppg and junior Shireen Sayareh (7.4 ppg) is the team’s leading scorer. Whitney should end the week with a win, but road wins never come easy no matter the opponent.
