BOYS BASKETBALL The Whitney High School varsity boys basketball team is coming off a big victory over Mira Loma after a four-game losing streak. The Wildcats (2-4 Capital Athletic League, 14-9 overall) have a tough week coming up with two road games. Whitney first plays at El Camino (4-2 CAL, 12-10 overall) on Feb. 10. El Camino has the second-best record in the CAL. Whitney’s Evan Orrick needs to have a good game if the Wildcats are going to win. The senior forward was averaging 14.5 points per game at the beginning of the season. Senior guard Sean Smith (11.3 ppg) and Nolan Eger (10.7 ppg) have also had impressive seasons for the Wildcats. Cordova _ Whitney ends the week at Cordova (2-4 CAL, 11-10 overall) on Feb. 15. This game could be for third-place in the CAL. It should be a challenging but fun week for Whitney. GIRLS BASKETBALL The Whitney High School varsity girls basketball team has its toughest challenge of the year when they host El Camino (6-0 CAL, 19-4 overall) on Feb. 9. El Camino is really strong averaging 60.8 points per game. They have three players averaging double figures in Simone Sheppard (12.2 ppg), Courtney Brignac (11.6 ppg) and Jade Sowell-Hundon (10.7 ppg). Whitney might not be able to stop all three, but they have to contain them somehow. Cordova _ The Wildcats finish the week at home against Cordova (2-4 CAL, 6-14 overall) on Feb. 14. The Lancers only have nine players on the roster, which should make it easier for Whitney to wear them out. Look for senior guard Alex Rodriguez (19.0 ppg, 6.8 rebounds pg, 2.2 steals pg) and junior point guard Kristin Ladas (11.0 ppg, 2.9 spg, 2.6 assists pg, 2.0 rpg) to have big games. A game against Cordova might be exactly what Whitney needs to end its season on a positive note.
