A theater near you just got a little closer. Last week construction crews started ripping out the walls of the bankrupt Mervyns store at the corner of Blue Oaks and Lonetree boulevards to start converting it into a 3,000-seat, $10 million multiplex movie theater. The largest auditorium will seat 300. “We’ll be putting up studs for the interior walls next week,” SR Entertainment partner Dan Tocchimi said. The old Mervyns signs came down two weeks ago and by mid-August SR Entertainment will be putting up a blue and gold sign that will read Blue Oaks 16 Cinemas. “This is one of the first theaters in the United States where the digital projectors will go up on an elevator and be adjusted by remote control,” Tocchimi said. The new technology eliminates the need for a costly second level to house the projection booth. Blue Oaks 16 Cinemas will be all digital picture and sound with rocking chairs that can be converted to a love seat. “All of our theaters will be equipped to run 3D,” Tocchimi said. The timing couldn’t be better since about nine new 3D movies are expected out by the end of the year. “We picked Rocklin because we think it’s one of the best cites in the country for a theater,” Tocchimi said. “You have all of Rocklin, all of Lincoln and part of Roseville to have tremendous drawing potential.” The theater will employ about 100 new workers, many part-time jobs. The anticipated construction has already boosted interest by other businesses. OMG! Yogurt owner Nicole Felix chose a pad right next to the theater, expecting big movie-going crowds. “It should be good for business when they open,” Felix said. The closest theaters are in Roseville on Eureka Road, but Blue Oaks 16 will be considered a different region. “We’ll have our own run,” Tocchimi said. “We’ll be playing the same pictures.” Blue Oaks 16 Cinemas is expected to open for business Nov. 24, just in time for Thanksgiving and the Christmas blockbuster season.
