Del Oro defeats Thunder in league wrestling
LOOMIS_Del Oro put on a great show as well as picking up a rather easy 67-6 win over Rocklin in the Sierra Foothill League opening wrestling competition last week. The Golden Eagles picked up seven wins by forfeit.
With only one win in their favor, the Thunder’s Sam Woods took to the mat against the Golden Eagles’ Saul Meneses in the heavyweight (285 pounds) division. Woods came in familiar with Meneses’ style having wrestled him several times before.
“I was pretty confident I was going to wrestle good,” said Woods, who added that he had already beaten Meneses four times in his career.
Woods opened a three-point lead in the first round and went up by four in the second. The Thunder standout was able to hold his opponent scoreless until 40 seconds remained in the bout. Woods went on to win the match 8-1.
Woods’ victory was one of only two Rocklin would get on the night. In the 182-pound weight class, Skyler Gonzales’ earned a 10-7 victory over Dylan Kainrath. That gave Rocklin their first two points of the evening.
Del Oro had six victories other than forfeit picking up two pins and two technical falls.
Rocklin head coach Torrean Tyus said the forfeits were the result of athletes either being sick or injured. The Thunder (0-1) now hopes to get back to full strength for a dual match against Roseville Jan. 9. That meet is scheduled to be held in Rocklin.
