One chance was all Whitney High School’s football team wanted in the second half Friday night in Loomis. When it finally arrived, the Wildcats let it slip through their hands like a rain-soaked football. The game then slipped away from Whitney, which had its season ended with a 26-9 loss to Del Oro in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs. The Wildcats finished 7-5 with the loss. The Golden Eagles (8-4) advance to face Patterson. Whitney trailed 19-9 in the fourth quarter when Del Oro punter Max Magleby fumbled the snap. Magleby recovered it and then was stopped by the Wildcats at the Golden Eagles’ 3-yard line. A 2-yard loss on a run, an incomplete pass and a bobbled snap by quarterback Jake Rodrigues left Whitney with fourth-and-goal at the 14. The Wildcats went from needing 3 yards for a touchdown to having to settle for a 31-yard field-goal attempt by Corey Palin. The kick sailed wide right with 9:07 to play. A scoring opportunity had been squandered, along with the Wildcats’ hopes. Kenny Andri’s 56-yard run put Del Oro in position to extend its lead on a 12-yard scoring run by Brandon Acuna. Magleby also mishandled a snap in the first quarter. Whitney capitalized on the miscue for its only touchdown.
