There were no big surprises from the California Interscholastic Federation selection committee for the California State Bowl Championship games, which were announced Sunday afternoon. And that was just fine as far as Casey Taylor was concerned. The Del Oro High coach will lead his Golden Eagles against Helix of La Mesa in Saturday’s Division II Bowl Game in Carson. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. Taylor was cautiously confident his team would get the nod for the bowl game, though Vacaville (13-1) was a legitimate contender after the Bulldogs won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship. The selection committee, made up of the 10 CIF section commissioners, could not pass up Del Oro and its impressive resumé. The Golden Eagles (13-1) will play in a state bowl game for the first time. They will carry the torch for the Sacramento region, which has sent at least one team to Carson each of the past four seasons. Grant, Rocklin and Folsom have previously played in bowl games, with Grant and Folsom winning state titles. Del Oro faces a Helix team that is fresh off a 44-6 win in the San Diego Section Division II title game. The Highlanders feature a pair of explosive running backs in Darrion Hancock and Michael Adkins. Quarterback Brandon Lewis can hurt teams with the pass and the Helix defense hasn’t given up more than one touchdown in a game since September. The Golden Eagles are on a similar role, having piled up 12 straight wins since a Sept. 3 overtime loss to Westlake — which will face De La Salle in Saturday’s Open Division State Bowl Championship. Del Oro beat previously unbeaten Oakdale 21-7 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship game on Dec. 2. Taylor said the team will likely leave for Carson on Thursday and have a chance to see the Home Depot Center field on Friday before suiting up for the game Saturday. Like Del Oro, Helix has a rich football tradition. NFL stars Reggie Bush and Alex Smith both attended Helix.
