The Sierra College men’s golf team captured its third straight Big 8 Conference championship by taking the top spot at the final conference tournament of the season. With Santa Rosa hot on their heels, the Wolverines did not wait around for someone else to help them take care of business, as Sierra went out and won the final two events of the year to lock up the title. While individual medalist honors at tourney No. 12 went to Shane Conner of Delta, who shot a one-under-par 71 on the 6,790-yard Catta Verdera Country Club course in Lincoln, Sierra took the team crown with consistency in the mid-70s. Led by freshman Kyle Chatelain’s 74 and a pair of golfers just one stroke behind him - Kevin Lucas and Ryan Miller – the Wolverines posted a team score of 376 that was five shots better than Delta’s second-place 381. Santa Rosa came in third with a 385. Two-time league MVP Stephen Edman and Eric McIntosh both posted scores of 76 to support the solid team effort. Sierra will seek to defend its NorCal championship next week at the Mira Vista Country Club in El Cerrito. “(It was) an up and down year,” said Sierra coach Kevin Hovancsek. “I am really proud of the men’s effort in stepping up their games. The future looks bright as freshmen Ryan Miller and Eric McIntosh have earned valuable experience and Kyle Chatelain’s solid play vaulted him into all-league honors. They have big shoes to fill.” The NorCal championship contest is Monday in El Cerrito, and the Wolverines hope to be coming home to close out the year at the state championships, which are scheduled for Monday, May 11 at Roseville’s Sierra View Country Club.
