Five Star celebrates year of solar power

Business brief
-A +A
Every time the sun shined last year, Five Star Auto Care in Rocklin saved money. The one-stop shop for comprehensive auto service has seen a drastic drop in its monthly electric bill ever since it switched to a solar energy system last year. Five Star Auto Care installed 612 solar panels with a total area of nearly 8,500 square feet (about a quarter of an acre) as part of a 104-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system — making it one of the first car washes in the greater Sacramento area to be largely solar powered. Since Five Star switched the solar system last fall, the car wash has produced enough electricity to power 14 homes for a year. It has also reduced its carbon use equivalent to removing 166 cars from the road for a year. Recently, Five Star was certified by the Sacramento Sustainable Business program.
