Standing among Golf Channel?s Big Break Atlantis? 12 professional women golfers is Rocklin native and professional golfer, Christina Stockton, who has competed in the series 17th season. ?My goal was to commit to each shot and that helped take my mind off the cameras,? said Stockton, who said focusing on the task at hand distracted her from the cameras. Stockton was one of the 12 women selected from a pool of 3,000 applicants. The show premieres May 14, featuring 10 episodes. Golf Channel announced the full cast on March 12 to coincide with the stateside start of LPGA?s Tour. Stockton said, because the experience was mentally challenging, she was able to learn about herself and ultimately become a better player. She said there were challenges every day. She described the golfers as ?12 beautiful girls with 12 different stories,? all of whom wish to play on the LPGA tour. The featured athletes represent women at different stages in their golf careers. While some are playing on the Symetra Tour, others became professional for the series. All the athletes will compete to play alongside the world?s most elite golfers. Incentives for performance included cash and prizes. The winner will receive an exemption to a ?to-be-announced? 2012 LPGA Tour tournament. The show will also showcase surprise guests including Yani Tseng, the world?s No. 1 woman golfer, a Big Break fan who had wanted to audition for the series when she moved to the United States from Taiwan. As the daughter of LPGA teaching professional Becky Herbert, Stockton, 24, was introduced to the game as a child. She was a three-time Sacramento City champion and a four-time all conference player at the University of San Francisco where she studied business administration. Stockton turned professional in 2011 and competition on this year?s agenda includes Symetra Tour, Cactus Tour, and Canadian Women?s Tour. Stockton now resides in Los Angeles and plays at Brentwood Country Club. As a Rocklin resident, she played at the Whitney Oaks Golf Club. She regards Rocklin as a special place to have grown up because of the supportive community and people. Big Break was filmed in the Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort and the game was played at the Ocean Club Resort Golf Course. The show premiered May 14th. The cameras were not entirely unfamiliar to Stockton, however, as she had done a press conference with George Lopez when she was 16. Stockton remembers doing ?a lot of deep breathing? and saying many prayers to help her get her through the playing and filming. Outside of golf, Stockton likes to run, cook, model and spend time with her family and friends. ?When you are playing golf for a living and money is tight, it can become stressful and sometimes not very fun. Playing on the show made me fall in love with this game all over again,? said Stockton, describing herself as being blessed.
