In the big battle for Sierra Foothill League girls volleyball supremacy, Granite Bay High held off Whitney 5-4 at Granite Bay in a matchup of previously unbeaten Sierra Foothill League foes. “Tonight's game was awesome, a true nail-biter,” said Granite Bay coach Sarah Kovach. “(Goalie) Alexis Stevens did a phenomenal job with 17 straight-on blocks as goalie, as well as a 2 steals from a field player.” Alison and Jessica Hamby each scored twice for the Grizzlies, and Shelby Romuk added the final Granite Bay tally as the team came from behind for the crucial win that puts it in the SFL driver’s seat. Whitney was led by Liz Grover’s two goals. The Wildcats led 1-0 after a single quarter, and 3-0 at the break before the Grizzlies staged their sensational comeback. They cut it to 4-3 after the third before scoring the only two goals of the final stanza. Granite Bay (7-0) tries to close out a perfect regular season when it visits Bear River Thursday. Whitney (5-1) has a difficult remaining schedule as it visits Del Oro (4-2) Thursday before hosting 5-1 Woodcreek in its regular season finales next Tuesday.
