Golf fundraisers benefit community

Sierra College _ The Sierra College Women’s Golf Team is hosting its annual tournament fundraiser at Whitney Oaks Golf Club, Aug. 26, not the previously reported Aug. 19, so there is still time to sign up and show support. The tournament is an 18-hole, four-ball scramble. Prizes will be awarded for best team score, longest drive (men and women), and closest-to-the-pin (men and women). Check-in begins at 7 a.m.; shotgun start begins at 8:30. Sponsors, individual players, and teams are asked to pre-register by calling Randy Elder (916) 652-8555, or Kim Silva (916) 201-7094. The cost is $100 per player and includes range balls, cart, and a box lunch. Tee-sign sponsorships are $100 (non golfer), or $500 for a team of four golfers. All proceeds go to help Wolverines Women’s Golf purchase supplies, and cover travel expenses. Whitney Oaks Golf Course is located at 2305 Clubhouse Drive, Rocklin. Gelfand Celebrity _ Local television personality Gary Gelfand will host his second annual Cure for Leukemia Golf Classic, Catta Verdera Country Club, Lincoln, Aug. 26. Celebrity guests who have confirmed include former Oakland Raider hall of famer Fred Biletnikoff, movie writer/director Mark S. Allen, voice of the Kings Grant Napear, and more. Allen, co-host of “Good Day Sacramento,” will serve as master of ceremonies. The day will include prizes for closest-to-the-pin, straightest drive, hole-in-one, and more. Prizes are rounds of golf for four at Catta Verdera, Blue Mountain, and Turkey Creek golf courses. Tickets are $150 per player, or $600 for a foursome. Dinner is included, or can be purchased separately for $55. Sponsorships are also available; all proceeds go to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Greater Sacramento. Gelfand was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia and has since made a full recovery. He is playing in this year’s classic. The charity outing is named in honor of Bill Santucci, a dedicated community leader in Roseville for several decades. An avid golfer, Santucci and California State Senator Ted Gaines were the original founders of the golf tournament. Gaines and Placer County Supervisors Kirk Uhler and Jack Duran are this year’s tournament hosts. The proceeds from the tournament, which is presented by Community 1st Bank, will be used for scholarships to help graduating Roseville High School District seniors and students at Sierra College. Last year the popular event raised more than $30,000 and provided 27 scholarships to deserving South Placer students. “Bill Santucci was the consummate public servant for many years and always had the best interests of Roseville and Placer County citizens in his heart,” Gaines said. “He loved this golf tournament and would be honored to have his name attached to such a worthy community endeavor that helps promotes higher education.” The four-person scramble format tournament begins with a 10 a.m. registration, followed by lunch at 11 a.m., and a 12:30 shotgun start at Sierra View, located at 105 Alta Vista Ave. A reception with appetizers and awards will follow the tournament. Cost is $125 per person and includes range balls, barbecue lunch, awards, raffle prizes and appetizers. Sponsorships of all levels are still available. The tournament is limited to 128 players. Gard Memorial _ A tournament to benefit the fight against colon cancer in memory of Michael A. Gard will be held at Turkey Creek Golf Course, Oct. 1. Colorectal cancer is both treatable and preventable. It affects over 14,000 in California alone, over 5,000 of which will not survive. This tournament will benefit the increase of awareness of this form of cancer, and improve access to screening by assisting those without health insurance or are under-insured. The fee is $115 per player for those who register by Sept. 12. The cost includes golf, cart and range balls, plus lunch and dinner. Those who do not golf can purchase dinner tickets for $50. Check in begins at 10:30 a.m, with lunch and a putting contest from 11:30 to 12:30. Play begins at 12:30 using a 4-ball scramble format. Turkey Creek offers rolling oak woodlands resembling Germany’s Black Forest. Soft spikes and appropriate golf attire is mandatory.
