Granite Bay High School basketball fans had much to celebrate Friday night after earning the title of co-champion of the Sierra Foothill League.

The Grizzlies share the honor with Woodcreek. Each had a 9-1 league record, losing to one another.

“It was great,” Granite Bay senior Jon Davis said. “It’s like all the hard work we put in over the past four years finally paid off. It’s a really good feeling.”

Granite Bay earned a league title one other time, four seasons ago, coach Jason Sitterud said. The Grizzlies went 11-1 to win the SFL championship in 2006-07 but lost to Grant in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

This season’s team captured the co-title with a tight 62-55 victory over Del Oro on Friday night.

The squads gave the crowd their money’s worth, as Del Oro (18-9, 5-5) led 29-27 at halftime.

“We just had to work as hard as we could,” Davis said. “We had to put everything out there. They’re a really good team. They played us hard.”

Robert Duncan and Kyle Howarth each had three fouls early in the second quarter and sat for nearly the rest of the half.

“That was crazy,” Granite Bay coach Jason Sitterud said. “Kyle had three, Rob had three, Jon Davis had two. Everybody had two or three. So a lot of guys had to step up, and that was exciting. It was a little bit chaotic there, and we just wanted to get through the half.”

With 4:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, Duncan grabbed an offensive rebound and made a put-back to give his squad the lead for good at 35-34 in a packed gym.

“We were able to get out and run a little more,” Sitterud said. “They also missed some shots, and they didn’t miss much the first half and we were able to turn it around.”

The Grizzlies took a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter and didn’t let go.
Granite Bay’s JV team fell to Del Oro 64-63 and finished the season 22-3 overall and 9-1 in the SFL.
