Head-on traffic collision on Sierra College Blvd. results in fatality
The man killed in a Penryn-area crash Monday morning has been identified as 53-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez, of Live Oak.
At about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, Andrey Yushchuk, 43, of Lincoln, was driving his beige 2005 Nissan Quest northbound on Sierra College Boulevard, at Caperton Court, at an unknown speed, according to the report from the California Highway Patrol.
Rodriguez, driving silver1993 Nissan Quest, was traveling southbound on Sierra College, north of Caperton at about 50 mph, the report said.
“For reason still under investigation, Mr. Yushchuk allowed his vehicle to cross over the double-yellow lines and into the southbound traffic lane, causing a head-on collision with the silver Nissan Quest,” the report said.
Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.
After the initial impact, the silver Nissan Quest swerved toward the right and rotated around, resulting in a second head-on collision with a 2011 Chevrolet pickup driven by Michael Steagall, 49, of Loomis). Steagall did not sustain any injuries in the collision, according to the report.
Calstar landed at the scene and transported Yushchuk to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with major injuries. Additionally, the report said Yuschuck was arrested at the hospital for driving under the influence of alcohol and was released into the custody of the hospital, due to his injuries.
Traffic in both directions on Sierra College was closed for about two hours for scene investigation.
