High school artists invited to apply to Summer School for the Arts
PlacerArts, together with the California State Summer School for the Arts, invites applications for the 27th annual session to be held July 13 through Aug. 9.
High school students may apply in the categories of animation, creative writing, dance, film and video, music, theater and visual arts. Additional information about the categories of study, application process, cost and scholarships is available at csssa.org. Applications for the 2013 summer session are due Feb. 28.
CSSSA is a four-week, intensive pre-college program for talented and motivated high school students in the arts, held on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia.
The California State Summer School for the Arts is a rigorous pre-professional training program in seven artistic disciplines: dance, music, theater, visual arts, creative writing, film/video and animation.
CSSSA offers an opportunity for students to spend one month immersed in a creative laboratory experiencing the inspiring and rigorous daily life of a professional artist.
California residents enrolled in grades nine through 12 are eligible to apply to CSSSA. Each summer, 500 students are selected through a statewide competitive application process. Participants are selected in the spring on the basis of their talent and creativity as demonstrated through assignments and teacher recommendations. Students who complete the four-week program are named California Arts Scholars.
As a bridge from high school to college, the program awards top students the Herb Alpert Foundation’s Emerging Young Artist Scholarships for collegiate study or pre-professional training programs, as well as three units of California State University course credit and names them “California Arts Scholars,” which distinguishes CSSSA graduates from their peers as they proceed to college and career.
Ensuring equity and access, no qualified student is denied admission to CSSSA due to financial circumstances; need-based scholarships are awarded by the CSSSA Foundation.
The CSSSA Arts Scholars Network is a project of the California State Summer School Arts Foundation on behalf of the California State Summer School for the Arts, and in partnership with the California Alliance for Arts Education and thirteen county arts councils. The program is supported by the CSSSA Foundation, the Herb Alpert Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
