Two female passengers were thrown from a car in a crash Tuesday on Interstate 80 that witnesses say was preceded by occupants passing a bottle between cars. The crash took place at about 2:10 p.m. on eastbound I-80, west of Horseshoe Bar Road in Loomis. According to a California Highway Patrol report, a BMW convertible and a Subaru Legacy were traveling at a high rate of speed and for reasons still under investigation, the driver of the BMW lost control and swerved across the traffic lanes, striking the concrete median. Impact from the crash overturned the BMW and ejected two female passengers sitting in the back seat. Officer David Martinez said that witnesses observed occupants of the vehicles passing a bottle between the two vehicles with the cars in motion and traveling together. Several bottles of alcohol were discovered in the Legacy, he said. The CHP is investigating the accident on the suspicion that alcohol or drugs could have been a factor, Martinez said. Both of the injured females were transported by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with major injuries. No identification on drivers or injured passengers was available at press time. – Gus Thomson
