We would like to welcome all our students back to school. The grounds and custodial staff have been working all summer getting our facilities prepared for the new school year. Our programs are intact and we are starting Pre-Kindergarten classes (Foundations) this year at multiple sites. This is an exciting time for our children with all the prospects that lay ahead of them. Our Academic Performance Index (API) scores continue to increase. The U.S. News and World Report has again recognized Rocklin and Whitney High Schools as two of the top 500 high schools in the nation. We have also had more of our elementary schools recognized as California Distinguished Schools. To further these achievements, it is important to expand our vision and start structuring our classrooms for 21st century learning. We will move the technology our students use for recreation towards tools for education. We will need the assistance of our parents in financing the renewal of our schools’ infrastructure. Last year we discussed how important it is — fiscally as well as academically — for your child to be in attendance everyday. The more minutes a student is in the classroom, the better the education. It also helps us financially when your student is at school. Last year, parents, who brought their children back to class after an appointment or who scheduled medical appointments after school, helped generate $173,000 for the district. We ask for your partnership again in keeping your children in school as we move forward in building the new 21st Century Classroom for our students. We welcome your children back to school and wish you all a great year. -- Greg Daley is president of the Rocklin Unified School District Board of Trustees.
