Thanks to the great work of WCTV, Whitney High Wildcats Broadcasting, Lincoln High’s audio/visual department and others, we are able to bring you football highlights on the Gold Country Media websites. Not all games we report on will have video highlights, but we’re trying to improve our coverage every day and every game. The talent these high-school broadcast journalists possess also goes beyond the football field. Whitney recently posted a piece on Rocklin’s Patriot Day tribute to the heroes of 9-11 at placerherald.com. It’s quite impressive. They have also branched out into other sports, namely basketball. Lincoln also did an introductory video for us putting a face to the name of last season’s Fighting Zebras cagers. Gold Country Media editors, sports editors and administrative personnel got together recently to come up with ways we could work with these future professionals. Some details were hammered out, but we are still exploring the possibilities. My sportswriter in Lincoln recently shot a clip on his iPad of the Zebras’ freshmen scoring a touchdown that was posted online. It didn’t turn out half bad, so we may be onto something there as well. Print journalism has been our main focus and that hasn’t changed. However, the Internet has become an integral part of what we do, so we’re working to expand in that area as well. Both media have their advantages and our goal is to blend them to give our audiences the best of both worlds. My sports cap is off to these young students and the fine work they do. We all support our local teams and these folks make up a part of the total team as well. So, smile when they ask you to be on camera and show your support in living color. The websites also include a number of things we cannot always fit into the sports sections of our newspapers. One of these items is an Outdoors column written by ultra-outdoorsman George deVilbiss. We make an effort to include him in newsprint but it isn’t always possible. George is terrific in what he writes, covering both hunting and fishing. His columns are usually in two parts that include both. Bill Poindexter, my colleague at the Press Tribune, works to feature George on all websites. So, if you don’t see his smiling face in the sports pages, try the websites. Bill also does a great job of tying together our different publications on a single website – placersports.com. We cover a lot of Placer County schools and many of the teams in the Sierra Foothill and Pioneer Valley leagues. Many times, not only can you find your favorite school team listed, but also follow the progress of those they play as well. We at Gold Country Media are always open to suggestions and comments in order to provide what our audiences would like to see. We cannot make every wish our command, but it has been said the squeaky wheel gets the grease – and hopefully, the coverage. E-mail Jim Linsdau at jiml@goldcountrymedia.com
