ROSEVILLE _ With roughly 50 seconds remaining in the game, the Rocklin girls varsity water polo team scored to pull off a 7-6 victory over Sonora in the Woodcreek Tournament last weekend. Annalese “Milk” McGovern found an open Aelish Guinn and hit her with a pass. Guinn, in turn, fired the winning shot into the net. “The girls played the best we’ve ever seen them play with two wins against very good teams (Sonora and Granite Bay),” said assistant coach Teresa Guinn, who said she learned how resolute the team is. Sonora had the final chance when the clock ticked down to 18 seconds but Rocklin field blocked the ball to end the game. Rocklin also beat Ignacio Valley 11-6 and lost to Lodi 13-4 in the tourney bracket. The Thunder championed 13-5 over league opponent Granite Bay as well. In Sierra Foothill League competition, the Thunder fell 17-4 to Nevada Union Thursday. On Tuesday, they defeated Woodcreek 11-5. Leading 5-4 going into the fourth quarter, Rocklin came alive to secure the victory over the Timberwolves. “The girls exploded,” said Coach Guinn, who watched the girls dominate the last quarter by outscoring Woodcreek 6-1.
