Letter to Editor: Tribute to football coach

-A +A
What would cause an engineer, a federal security director, an NFL scout, a surveyor, a high school coach, a burly retired guy, a couple of financial and real estate gurus, a surgeon and arguably one of the best football coaches in California to meet at the Nevada County Fair in Grass Valley? The answer is Sierra College football. It has been 30 years since a group of guys played football for coach Rex Chappell at Sierra. Yes, coach Chappell has seen his share of success during his 21-year reign as head coach, including two league championships and the honor of being named Coach of the Year in 1990, but he was so much more. Every year he would scrounge up a group of guys from surrounding communities, throw them into his blender and call them a team. But it didn’t stop there. He was a friend and mentor to each of us. He counseled us on the “school of hard knocks” called life. I think it is safe to say that Coach Chappell helped us succeed in areas well beyond the football field. You are a class act.
