Local middle schools land wrestlers in championship
LOOMIS _ The top middle school wrestlers from all over California converged on Del Oro High School last weekend for the annual Tournament of Champions featuring more than 560 athletes. The wrestlers represent grades 6-8.
Leading a team of nine Eagles into the event, Springview Middle School’s Evan Hackett took fifth in the 142-pound class.
Joining him in the TOC were Springview wrestlers Justin Swindler (70 pounds), Satpreet Basra (103), Lukas Troutman (103), Gursey Basra (112), Charlie Mullennix (135), Michael Ferge (135), Andrew Perkins (153) and Patrick Craighead (205).
Granite Oaks Middle School wrestling coach Ken Klein sent nearly a dozen of his wrestlers to Del Oro for the meet. Although the Falcons did not place, Coach Klein said just qualifying is a feat in itself.
The Granite Oaks’ wrestlers were Cole Kachmar (70), Joe Kachmar (83), Shane Kumararatne (89), Logan Bik (103), Hunter Gonzalez (103), Kurtis Koch (108), Mitchell Herberger (108), Trevor Barnes (112), Eric Merino (122), Brian Horn (128), Christian Comes (142) and Wyatt Walsh (153).
The Falcons had 128 student/athletes come out for wrestling this season.
