Make room for kittens
By: Staff report
Last year’s kittens at reduced fee at the Placer SPCA
Spring is here and that means kitten season for the Placer SPCA. As staff prepares for the hundreds of kittens brought in each spring and summer, the Placer SPCA is offering all adult cats at a reduced adoption fee of $25 in order to make room. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter surgery, a veterinary exam, pet identification tag, microchip, FELV/FIV test and FVRCP and Rabies vaccinations. “I saw one of the first groups of ‘bottle baby’ kittens today,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra. “They are cute, but they also put a strain on our resources – and we know there are many more on the way.” Bottle babies are motherless kittens so small and helpless that they must be hand-fed by staff and volunteers every few hours. Kitten season often means adult cats may get overlooked and they can be the best choice for a family looking for a mellow companion with an established personality. As Placer County’s local animal welfare experts, the Placer SPCA strongly encourages everyone to have their pets spayed and neutered. “Even if you are able to find homes for your pets’ litters, think of all the homeless animals waiting for homes in area shelters,” Vierra said. One female cat can have as many as three litters per year, with an average of four to six kittens each time, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The Placer SPCA offers a low-cost Spay and Neuter Assistance Program through a partnership with area veterinarians. The subsidized program is available to all residents of Placer County.
