Man from Cool dies in solo crash on I-80 near Rocklin

A driver from Cool died Monday night after his sport utility vehicle veered off westbound Interstate 80 west of Rocklin Road and a struck a large oak tree.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, at 8:08 p.m. Robert H. Atteberry, 66, allowed his 1998 red Toyota 4Runner to swerve to the right and then leave the north roadway edge and hit the oak tree head-on. The cause of accident is still under investigation according to the CHP.

Atteberry, who was wearing his seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The highway patrol reports that it's unknown if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash, and that will be determined after a toxicology report by the Placer County Coroner's Office. Traffic on I-80 was not affected at the time of the incident.
