Students from Maria Montessori Charter Academy showed support for one of their own recently through a “Relay Recess” event at the school.

Tyler Chatterton, a student of event coordinator and sixth-grade teacher Emily Jennings, has been battling brain cancer.

“We've always done alternative ‘healthy heart’ activities during Valentine's Day, and this year we decided to partner with the American Cancer Society and do a ‘Relay Recess’ with them,” explained Brent Boothby, principal/administrator.

The jog/walk-a-thon fundraiser included educational stations about healthy living, manned by volunteers from the American Cancer Society. Boothby said so far the students have raised more than $4,700 in sponsorships.

As a prelude to the event, Mrs. California, LaHoma Caudill, a cancer survivor herself, spoke to the students and then led other cancer survivors around the loop for the first lap.
