McClatchy claims inaugural Whitney High Tennis Classic

Wildcats take third place

It was a full day of tennis as seven high schools and one “B” team took the courts in the inaugural Whitney High Tennis Classic last Saturday. The event took place on the campuses of both Whitney and Rocklin high schools. Whitney 4, Weston Ranch 2 _ The Wildcats Konner Macias (6-2, 6-2) and Sumer Sinha (6-1, 6-4) took care of singles against the Cougars, while Ryan Nielson and Kyle Branderhorst (2-6, 6-3, 10-4) and Henry Foote and Shane Wilson (6-2, 6-1) took care of doubles. The win gave the Wildcats the No. 3 spot in the tournament. McClatchy 4, Whitney 2 _ Sinha (6-3, 6-3) earned a tough win in singles and Foote and Wilson took a 6-2, 6-3 decision from the Cougars in doubles, but the visiting ‘Cats proved hungrier in the semifinal match. Whitney 5, Lincoln 1 _ The Wildcats took control of the singles matches to come away with a victory in the opening round of the Classic. Macias (6-0, 6-2) and Sinha (6-0, 6-1) had a fairly easy go of it and Romey Kang (7-6, 6-4) came through to put Whitney up 3-0. Nielson and Branderhorst got past Lincoln’s Abner Apsley and Isaac Thich 7-5, 6-4 to seal the victory. Foote and Wilson then wrapped up the match defeating Tyler Newberry and Tanner Apsley 6-2, 6-3.
