Like so many in the audience Saturday, I was moved to tears as I listened to the stories of the three finalists for the Soroptimist International of South Placer Women’s Opportunity Award, which provides financial support to a woman who is the breadwinner for her family and has overcome struggles to further her education.
A woman I admire, Mayor Diana Ruslin, gave a passionate speech about pursuing your dreams. She reminded the audience of a quote to keep in mind when faced with a new challenge: “Why? Why not? Why not me? Why not now?”
I was honored to share the room with such an inspiring group of women, and felt while listening to the speakers that there must have been a reason I found myself at the luncheon.
While I haven’t faced near the obstacles the finalists have, I still found myself with goose bumps during the awards ceremony. You see, I’m faced with a new challenge myself.
As of last week, I am the editor of the Placer Herald in Rocklin, the Roseville Press Tribune and the Granite Bay View. I’m humbled by the opportunity to work in these fine communities, and grateful for the support system in place to help me serve you as well as you deserve.
Starting this week, Reporter Andrew Westrope will take on the always-busy job of covering education in Rocklin. He’ll also write human interest stories, breaking news and any other stories just waiting to be told in this city. He joins a dedicated team of freelance writers and photographers who will continue to make this a community newspaper that shines.
I value your story ideas and comments. Please keep them coming, firstname.lastname@example.org.
