Overtime game gives NU 30-27 win over Rocklin
Kniffin’s return not quite enough
Rocklin High’s regular quarterback Daniel Kniffin return to the lineup had a big impact against Nevada Union, but the lack of a running attack allowed the Miners to come away with a 30-27 win, in overtime.
Kniffin hit on 22-40 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, but the ground game was sorely missing. With Raymon Kendall and Brandon Crotts missing from the backfield, the Thunder was only able to gain 53 yards on 12 attempts.
That left Kniffin vulnerable to the pass rush, and indeed, Nevada Union sacked the junior signal-caller four times for a total loss of 30 yards. Rocklin’s Marvin Gardner rushed nine times for 62 yards, and broke one for 66, and he had one TD.
The loss left the Thunder winless in the Sierra Foothill League, a rare occurrence for the Rocklin football program. The club’s overall record was 3-7.
Nevada Union improved to 3-2 in the SFL, and 7-3 overall. They had 444 total yards against Rocklin, but the Thunder secondary intercepted four passes. Matt Garrison’s pick was returned for a touchdown.
