Pierovich tops Lincoln’s Hunt in Burton Classic

Scott Pierovich beat Lincoln’s Tony Hunt to the checkered flag by 2.106 seconds in the first Larry Burton Classic on Saturday night at All American Speedway in Roseville.

The USAC Western Sprint main event is named in honor of Burton, the longtime promoter in Roseville and a five-time champion at the old West Capital Raceway.

The main event featured lap speeds topping 95 mph from three of the 17 cars in the field.

Luis Ramos started on the pole and led the first 13 laps before finishing third. Pierovich started fifth and took the lead from Ramos on lap 14. Hunt started sixth, took over second from Ramos on lap 25, and the leaders ran 1-2-3 over the last half of the race.

Hunt was the No. 1 qualifier at 12.694 seconds around the one-third-mile oval. Pierovich qualified No. 2 at 12.713. Hunt and Pierovich won the heat races.

NCMA Sprint — Ed Amador, starting last in the seven-car field, won the 25-lap main event. He didn’t lead until lap 24. Thomas Leiby led 18 laps until Amador drove past. Justin Kawahatha finished second.

Leiby set fast time at 13.338, and David Goodwill won the heat.

Legends of the Pacific — Tony Mangini drove to a 3.492-second victory over Jeremy Doss in the 31-lap main event. Mangini started fourth, drove to the front on the eighth lap and led the rest of the way. Frankie Marks finished third.

James Bickford set fast time at 15.232. Mangini and Joe Leduc won the heats.

Ford Focus Midget — Garett Peterson was the top qualifier at 13.532 and won the first 40-lap main event, and Keegan Walmer captured the second main, a 25-lap feature. Walmer, the No. 2 qualifier, also had the top one-lap speed at 89.543 mph.

Young Guns — Walmer set fast time at 14.287, won the heat race and then won the 20-lap feature.
