The Placer Herald Associate Editor Lauren Gibbs will be named California’s 2011 Community Editor of the Year in connection with National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Gibbs will be honored Friday, April 1 at Sacramento’s Garden Pavilion during the Heroes With Heart Gala hosted by child advocate Marc Klaas. Klaas is seen nightly on CNN/HLN’s Nancy Grace and is president and founder of Klaas Kids Foundation. The commemorative plaque represents excellence in reporting that highlights the accomplishments of young people, while encouraging an interest in journalism. Gibbs’ nominator noted several stories she wrote and/or edited, which featured children in Placer County going the extra mile, and mentioned how frequently this editorial content is seen framed and displayed in Placer County businesses and establishments. “When children see other young people getting attention for making positive choices, they are much more likely to move forward a more productive direction themselves,” said De’ Kovill, executive director of WynSpring Family Resource Center, the organization partnering with Klaas Kids to kick off National Child Abuse Prevention Month. There will be four major events, including the Heroes With Heart Gala where Gibbs is being recognized. Placer Herald Publisher Jean Lund will receive a matching accommodation for empowering the purposeful efforts. Additional gala award winners include Sacramento S.W.A.T., Sacramento sheriff’s and police departments and Granite Bay High School. ~Staff report
