SACRAMENTO _ The Rocklin High football team went after big game in their season opener and almost came away a winner, but a strong second half by Pleasant Grove gave the Eagles a 35-21 victory Friday at Sheldon High School. A couple weeks earlier, Thunder wide receiver Dominic Giampaoli had described Rocklin’s attack against the highly-ranked Eagles as “air force,” and that it was. However, the silver-and-blue’s ground game was nowhere to be found and the Thunder defense eventually just couldn’t contain the Eagles in the late going. Air force certainly described senior quarterback Daniel Kniffin who put up vapor trails all night connecting on 26 passes with only 10 fly-bys and two crashed landings. He hit six different receivers to roll up 252 yards and two touchdowns – both caught by Giampaoli. Giampaoli hauled in nine aerials and accounted for 101 yards of Rocklin offense. The balance of a complementary rushing game needed amounted to 14 yards on 13 attempts. Rocklin was without the services of senior running back Raymon Kendall. In spite of having to rely on a one-dimensional offense, the Thunder held its ground for three quarters. However, Pleasant Grove scored twice in the final stanza for the victory. The Eagles couldn’t match Rocklin’s air power, but they didn’t have to. The running tandem of Isaiah Sanders (25-120, TD) and Ian Broom (6-48, TD) was enough to tip the scales in Pleasant Grove’s favor; that along with two sacks, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. Rocklin returns home to host Oak Ridge. The Trojans had little trouble defeating Vista del Lago last week 42-6. In the Sierra Foothill League, all but Nevada Union lost their preseason openers. The Miners defeated McQueen of Reno, Nev. 27-10. Rocklin 21, Pleasant Grove 35 Thunder 0 14 7 0 – 21 Eagles 0 7 14 14 – 35 TEAM LEADERS Passing – Daniel Kniffin, 26-38, 252 yds, 2 TD, 2 INT.
