Police host free 'etch, catch' event

-A +A
Rocklin Police will host an “Etch and Catch” event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Les Schwab Tires, 5610 Pacific St. Area residents can schedule an appointment to have the vehicle’s license plate number etched on the catalytic converter, explained Rocklin Police Community Programs Coordinator Michael Nottoli. “License plate numbers can provide police with investigative information to identify victims and prosecute criminals,” he continued. There has been a rash of catalytic converter thefts from vehicles in the south Placer region over the past few months. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 29 reported thefts in Rocklin, he added. Thieves have been targeting vehicles with higher ground clearance, like trucks and SUVs, Nottoli said. “Although some arrests have been made, these crimes continue to occur,” Nottoli said. Catalytic converters, along with copper and other metals, have become a hot commodity for thieves. The Rocklin Police Department is attempting to address the identification issue by partnering with local businesses to etch a vehicle license plate number on the converters. The identification marks will help police track victims as well as successfully capture and prosecute criminals. Rocklin’s event is being sponsored by Les Schwab Tires, Lowes, Superfast Signs, Big Daddy’s Pizza Co., Starbucks Coffee, Kona Coffee, Wave Broadband, Minuteman Press, the Rocklin Police and Fire Volunteers, the Sierra College Auto Club, and the Rocklin Chamber of Commerce. Only 80 appointments will be available, Nottoli pointed out. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the Rocklin Police Department’s “Etch and Catch” Hotline at (916) 625-5418. Participants will need to provide name, contact telephone number, the make and model of the vehicle, and your city of residence. Some “drive-up” participants may be available, if space and time allows. Rain may force cancellation of the event. For specific questions about the event, call Michael Nottoli at (916) 625-5416. -- Staff report ________ Free 'etch, catch' event What: Vehicle license plate number etched on catalytic converter When: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11 Where: Les Schwab Tires, 5610 Pacific St. Cost: Free For an appointment, call hotline at (916) 625-5418
