Putt for higher education dough at Scramble for Scholars

-A +A

The cost of higher education has skyrocketed in recent years, making the dream of pursuing an affordable education out of reach for many deserving students.
In the last 10 years, the cost of higher education has risen faster than the cost of most consumer goods and services, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Higher education costs have increased an average of 4.5 to 7.5 percent annually, compared to the rate of 1 to 5.5 percent for overall inflation during the same period.
To support higher education for Rocklin’s graduating seniors, the Rocklin Area Chamber of Commerce hosts one of the area’s most successful golf tournaments, Scramble for Scholars. The money raised from Scramble for Scholars, funds educational scholarships to graduating seniors from Rocklin, Victory and Whitney high schools.
“Getting into college these days is not an easy thing, but figuring out how to pay for it is even harder,” explains Kelly Nihen, a Rocklin High graduate and scholarship recipient from 2010. “The scholarship I received from the Rocklin Chamber really made a difference and helped me cover the costs of going to college.”
One local business that has consistently shown their support to Rocklin students is Randy Peters Catering & Event Planning. For the seventh consecutive year, Randy Peters Catering & Event Planning has signed on as Scramble for Scholars title sponsors, pledging their support. The title sponsorship alone funds educational scholarships for at least ten Rocklin students.
“Scramble for Scholars is the perfect opportunity for the local community to get involved and make a difference in the cost of higher education,” said Diana Ruslin, a Rocklin City Councilwoman and a member of the Chamber’s interview team. “We have the privilege of interviewing and awarding scholarship money to many qualified students in our community, which makes higher education a real possibility for them.”
The Scramble for Scholars golf tournament will tee off on Friday, May 6 at Whitney Oaks Golf Club in Rocklin. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with networking and boxed lunches, followed by a noon shotgun start.
