CITRUS HEIGHTS – The Colfax Falcons’ football team bounced back to the winning side here Friday night and a big reason why was Pat Rawlins. Rawlins, a senior running back, was literally a one-man wrecking crew in helping the Falcons notch a hard earned 24-13 Pioneer Valley League win over Mesa Verde at San Juan’s McArthur Field. More than carrying the brunt of Colfax’s offensive load, Rawlins carried the ball 33 times for 168 yards and scored three touchdowns to help the Falcons subdue the Mavericks. Colfax, which improved to 4-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in PVL games, used a 2-yard scoring run and an extra point kick by Mackey Leal to hold a slim 7-6 lead over the Mavericks at halftime. The Falcons had dominated most of the first half but lost a fumble at the Mavericks’ two-yard line to squelch one threat and threw a pass interception to foil another push. Colfax then took the second half kickoff and responded with a nice drive that Rawlins capped with a 20-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons up, 14-6. Early in the fourth quarter, Colfax's Holden Klar forced a Mesa Verde fumble and Alex Chaney recovered. The Falcons capitalized on the turnover with Rawlins scoring his third touchdown on a one-yard plunge. Mesa, however, wouldn’t go away as the Mavericks used a long touchdown pass with just over seven minutes to play to pull within 21-13. Colfax then answered the Mesa Verde score by putting the game's final points on the board when Leal booted a 32-yard field goal for the final margin of victory. A fumble recovery by Francis Stanford set up Colfax's score. Josh Moreno picked up 51 more rushing yards on nine carries for the Falcons while Avery Baccala added 23 yards on four trips. Mark Machholz was 7 of 17 through the air for 62 yards. Meanwhile,Keith Russell had 30 yards on three grabs for the Falcons. Colfax hosts El Dorado next Friday.
