Junior places third at 189 at Masters Meet
Wrestler Brandon Barone will represent Rocklin High at the CIF State Meet in Bakersfield on Friday and Saturday. Barone, a junior, earned his way into the state finals by placing third at the Masters Meet that concluded Friday at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. After losing his first match of the tournament, Barone (189 pounds) won his next seven. This is almost unheard of because the competition is so close at this level, said Rocklin coach Grant Depue about Barone's seven consecutive wins. After the first loss, Barone's season would have ended with a loss in any of his next five matches. The pressure was outrageous, Depue said. I was a nervous wreck and couldn't eat or sit still. Brandon wrestled superbly and he is very deserving of the third-place result. He dropped 12 pounds in two weeks to get to this post-season weight. And his strength and athleticism are some of his strong points and (he is) tough as nails (so that) makes his wrestling fun to watch. This was also the first year that each Sierra Foothill League team will send at least one wrestler to the state meet. Whitney had two wrestlers compete at UOP but sophomores Jordan Achanzar (112) and Nazir Rasooli (135) were not able to place in the top eight among their weight class at the Masters Meet over the weekend. Rocklin sophomore Greg Goldner (160) also saw his season end at the Masters Meet.
