Rocklin’s Barone, Whitney’s Achanzar claim titles at league tournaments
By: Staff report
Rocklin High will send three wrestlers to the Division II championships this weekend while Whitney had four wrestlers qualify for the DIV championships. Brandon Barone was Rocklin's lone Sierra Foothill League champion as he placed first in his 189-pound weight class at the league tournament at Del Oro on Saturday. Each wrestler that placed in the top four in his weight class qualified to move on to the divisional round. Brandon had been wrestling at 215 (pounds) for us all year and he took it upon himself to cut about 11 pounds in two weeks to get down to 189, Rocklin coach Grant Depue said. I look forward to seeing some tough competition for him this next week. Barone pinned a Roseville opponent in the finals after defeating a Granite Bay wrestler in the semifinals. Joining Barone this weekend will be Barone's teammates Nick Williams (112) and David Hindersinn (140). Williams, a freshman, placed third Saturday. He was defeated by Woodcreek's Quinn Walker in the first round before pinning him later in the day. Nick has lost to Walker each of the last three years and was very excited to finally get a victory, Depue said. Nick is a motivated young man who does sprints and pull-ups every lunch to get stronger. Hindersinn, a senior, placed fourth and he was defeated by Granite Bay's Matt Morse twice Saturday. I am eager to get David back on the mat this weekend because I feel we now know how to approach this Granite Bay wrestler, Depue said. Whitney's team participated in the Pioneer Valley League tournament on Feb. 7 at Lincoln. Sophomore Jordan Achanzar (112) became Whitney's first-ever league champion in wrestling while sophomore teammate Nazir Rasooli (135) placed third. Whitney freshmen Justin Martinez (103) and Jake Coelho (125) both placed fourth. Whitney's John Richardson (145), Julio Ceron (189) and Joe Mummelthie (215) each placed fifth and they will be alternates this weekend. The DII championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Hiram Johnson starting at 9 a.m. The DIV tournament will be Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. at Foothill. The top wrestlers from both tournaments will advance to the Masters Tournament, Feb. 22-23, at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
