Rocklin Academy charter public school took second place in the Destination Imagination California State Competition held April 10 in San Jose. Rocklin Academy’s team, The Originals, competed with seven other state finalists in their division and more than 170 school teams at the California State Finals. They are invited to compete at the Destination Imagination Global Finals May 26-29. Global Finals is an annual event held at the University of Tennessee bringing together 16,000 participants from the U.S. and more than 38 countries as teams showcase their creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. “A win like this requires commitment, creativity and teamwork,” said Mary McGown, team manager. “D.I. is a whole family commitment, and I’d like to thank the parents who supported their students and helped make this happen.” Destination Imagination is an extra-curricular nonprofit organization that promotes problem-solving and teamwork as students work on innovative solutions to problems and improvisational challenges. For the state competition, The Originals researched robotic technology, created an original story demonstrating how one character’s life is changed by robotic technology, designed and built a robot, and integrated the robot into the story. They wrote their own script, designed sets, transformed a part of the set into the robot design, and constructed their own costumes. Rocklin Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Rocklin. ~Staff report
