Rocklin Academy founder Wendy Boyd retires
Wendy Boyd, a long-time Rocklin resident, founder of Rocklin Academy and Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, has retired. She will be recognized by Rocklin Academy Family of Schools at its Oct. 22 board meeting her many years of devotion to making a difference in the community.
Boyd and handful of other parents and teachers in Rocklin sat around a kitchen table to talk about a smaller school here, one that focused on the Core Knowledge of Curriculum, which explicitly identifies what children should learn at each grade level and ensures a coherent approach to building knowledge across all grade levels. These ideas and concepts formed what would become Rocklin Academy. The Rocklin Academy Family of Schools has now grown to include two elementary sites as well as a middle/high school, Western Sierra Collegiate Academy.
Boyd, a trained dental hygienist, threw herself into the education world and, for the next decade, worked without pay to build up charter schools in the Rocklin area. She went on to serve on the board of directors for Rocklin Academy Family of Schools, serving as chair since 2003. Boyd officially stepped down from her position as chair this summer. She said she plans to continue her volunteerism, but in smaller roles.
“Wendy has dedicated 10 years of her life to ensure that all families have a choice in their child’s education,” said Rocklin Academy teacher Heidi Little. “It has been an honor to work and learn from her.”
“Her accomplishments are significant and will forever influence our achievements of excellence,” said board Chair Doug Johnson. “Without her leadership, we would not be the premier education choice we are today.”
Boyd never imagined that those meetings around the kitchen table would lead to more than 1,000 enrolled students and more than 1,200 who are on a waiting list.
“It has been my privilege to work together with the professional staff of educators, families, students and community leadership of the Rocklin Academy Family of Schools,” she said. “It is rewarding that I have been able to be a part of creating schools of choice for families in Rocklin. I am confident that the next generation of leadership will embrace the challenges of preserving the charters, the partnership with families and educators and the excellence in schools that the founders envisioned.”
“Wendy’s leadership has been the foundation of our success,” said Robin Stout, Rocklin Academy principal. “Without Wendy’s relentless commitment to school choice, as well as her fundamental belief that all students can learn and that all students can achieve at high levels, Rocklin Academy would not be what it is today. She ahs gone above and beyond for our schools, as an advocate for parents, a support for teachers and administration and a voice for parents.”
