Rocklin High’s varsity girls tennis team broke out in a big way with two key wins over Sierra Foothill League contenders Nevada Union, 8-1, and Woodcreek, 7-2 last week. With Granite Bay and Del Oro holding the top two spots, the victories probably solidified third place for the Thunder. The Nevada Union match closed the first half for the Thunder (5-2) while the Woodcreek match opened the second half of league play. “This was Woodcreek’s playoff match and we were ready,” Eckenburg said. Rocklin beat Woodcreek 5-4 in the first round of league play as Rocklin was swept in doubles. This time Rocklin juniors Tanya Sukkari and Isabel Lopez teamed up for the first time this year and got a win in doubles. “It was amazing to see the two of them flying around the court, putting balls away,” Eckenburg said. “Tanya played the best match of her career, making huge shots on key points.” Rocklin’s Amber Beebe and Becca Kinsey also earned a win in doubles, their win coming in three sets. In singles, Thunder seniors Nathalie Dumm (6-1, 6-0) and Rachel Leung (6-0, 6-0) started things off by taking down their opponents in quick fashion. Both players went three sets against the same opponent in the first round of league play. Rocklin’s Stefanie Studen, Melinda Marion and Amanda Bruns each earned victories over Woodcreek and Nevada Union in singles. Rocklin will face Roseville today at 3:30 p.m. at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.
