Freshmen Harned, Cole moved to varsity
Looking forward to a competitive season, Rocklin boys golf has completed preseason play. The first league match was scheduled March 13, but has been postponed due to rain. The team has competed in three preseason matches, all of which have been losses. However, they were against very good teams. “I am not super concerned about the trends. This is one of the best teams I have had, so I have pretty high expectations,” said head coach, Tim Hurrianko. Moving into league play, Woodcreek is the projected team to beat. Del Oro and Granite Bay are also expected to be very good. “We have three teams to beat. It is going to be tough,” Hurrianko said. This year’s team includes two standout freshmen, Sam Harned and Mike Cole. According to Hurrianko, only two other freshmen have ever been pulled up to varsity in his coaching experience. “It is rare for freshmen to make the varsity team. They are very mature and not intimidated,” Hurrianko said. Harned and Cole are consistently shooting in the low 40s. With golf being a numbers based sport, they are proving to be valuable to the varsity squad. The Rocklin boys are anticipating their next match, which will be rescheduled once the rain stops.
