— Not surprisingly, it’s numbers that tell the story of Rocklin Elementary School’s Math Olympiad team and its problem-solving talent.
Take sixth-grader Jeffery Seyfried.
He was one of only 99 students worldwide to receive a Dr. George Lenchner Medallion, awarded for a perfect score in the Mathematical Olympiads program. That’s five possible points in all five competitions for a perfect score of 25.
The local Math Olympiad team is comprised of 31 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teams.
This year there was such a high interest in the math team that students had to take a preliminary test, be recommended by a teacher and high standardized test scores.

— The battle for the Top of the Rock jumped out to a furious pace on Friday, with the Phillies and Blue Jays putting on an offensive show through the first two innings.
That’s when fortune would take its course for the Phillies, who used a four-run outburst in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good on their way to claim the Top of the Rock.
The Phillies had to overcome three-run deficits twice in winning this one, and timely hitting was the key for them.
Both teams now prepare for the Tournament of Champions in Lincoln, with the Blue Jays opening their T.O.C. schedule today against Lincoln.
