Using a rock-solid defense in the final period, the Rocklin girls basketball team defeated Del Oro 42-38 Tuesday night to put themselves back in the running for a Sierra Foothill League championship.

That win has set the stage for a league showdown with visiting Nevada Union (5-1) tonight at Rocklin (4-2). The only league loss the Miners have suffered was at Del Oro Jan. 23.

The Thunder held the Golden Eagles to just two points in the fourth quarter. That erased a Del Oro two-point lead while the girls in blue put up eight to win by four.

“We did a phenomenal job on defense over all,” said Rocklin head coach Rob Ferraro. “Lydia Summers did a great job with Del Oro’s Lauren Heyn.”

Heyn, a sophomore, scored eight points in the contest. In their first meeting Jan. 11, Heyn put up 16 points.

Summers had a double-double scoring 19 and pulling down 19 rebounds. Ferraro said his athletes also did a good job of keeping the Eagles’ big girls off the boards.

Jordan Purvis scored 11 points on the night and Ariana Hildan tallied five.

Ferraro said Nevada Union comes in with a different offense than Del Oro uses. He said the Miners depend more on the play of their guards and perimeter shooting. However, he said when able NU will attack the basket.

Coach Ferraro said it is important Rocklin maintain its poise as Nevada Union can score in bunches. He said if the Thunder can maintain their composure should that happen tonight his team has a good chance of upsetting the SFL’s No. 1 club.

Ferraro said he wasn’t sure how long it had been since Rocklin’s girls had defeated Del Oro in basketball, but estimations were from eight to 12 years ago.
