Rocklin High’s varsity boys tennis team went 3-0 last week, using 22 players in the process. The Thunder (12-4 overall, 7-1 in the Sierra Foothill League) beat Roseville 9-0 before beating Oakmont and Vista del Lago. The victory over Roseville was the first sweep of the year for the Thunder. Rocklin’s Nathan Dudley fought for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles. Tim Paras and Kevin Branderhorst also impressed Rocklin coach Dale Eckenburg. Oakmont, which is much better than it has been in recent seasons, was next for Rocklin. “We played a reversed lineup (against the Vikings) putting the doubles on first which contributed to the slow start,” said Eckenburg, who saw his team lose at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. While Rocklin’s Jared Pickrell and Dmitriy Zamayev finished off their opponents quickly, Justin Tynan and Tyler Clark rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory as did David Cummings and Jared Holden (3-6, 6-2, 6-2). “Our doubles are playing well right now, serving, returning and putting the balls away at the net,” Eckenburg said. Rocklin’s Ben Penney finished off the match, improving his record to 9-4 on the season with his 6-4, 6-0 win. Dudley won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Vista del Lago is a new school in Folsom with only freshmen and sophomores so Rocklin played its young players to make things more competitive. Rocklin won 6-3. “It also allowed some of our new guys a chance to get in a match,” Eckenburg said. Conor Delaney got the Thunder on the board first with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles while Cummings cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Shawn Kim won his match 6-3. Colin Speth and Ethan Watson won at No. 2 doubles (7-5, 6-1) while Travis Holland and Cameron Stark won a tight match (7-5, 7-5) at No. 1 doubles. Rocklin’s Eddie Locks and Josh Bridge won at No. 3 doubles (12-10).
