The Rocklin High girls tennis team wrapped up the first third of its season with a 9-0 victory over Whitney High Saturday. The match also included a free community clinic as part of the Thunder’s popular summer program. “What a great day it was to see the youth of our community come to learn some tennis while watching our girls play some great tennis,” said Rocklin tennis head coach Dale Eckenburg. Eckenburg said Rocklin has had preseason victories over some tough teams in preparing for Sierra Foothill League play. They look to match up with the league’s top teams and go deep into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs this year. The Thunder has gotten solid play from its seniors Shelby Kubota, Jessica Miller, Rachel Kim, Christina Dyok, Taylor McDougall and Amber Calzada. “Not many teams have the quality seniors we have up and down the lineup,” Eckenburg said. “I can’t say enough about the work ethic and confidence the rest of the team has in these ladies” Rounding out the team are juniors Farrell Ahlf, Molly Garcia-Kaer, Allysa Matchen, Sangeeth Ramamurthy and Valerie Todd, along with some outstanding play from sophomores Anna Bothe and Lexi Yates. “I can’t say enough about the hard work Anna and Lexi have brought to the team,” said Eckenburg. “They never put down the racquet from last season and it really has showed with their move up the ladder.” In spite of Rocklin’s progress, Eckenburg said the club still has a ways to go. He said his players must continue to improve in order to compete with Del Oro and Granite Bay. The team also traveled to San Luis Obispo earlier this season to bond and get used to playing on the road. The Thunder was scheduled to open SFL play at Nevada Union Tuesday, then return to host Del Oro today. “There are no days off in the SFL,” Eckenburg said.
