Customers visiting the new Grocery Outlet store in Rocklin will most likely find owner Ralph Richards hard at work, stocking shelves, organizing groceries and helping the crew serve its customers.

Richards, who owns the store with his wife, Laura, said owning Grocery Outlet is the culmination of 32 years with Albertsons and a year of training to run the discount grocery store.
“The whole thing is family,” Laura said. “It’s family-run, it was started by a family, it’s still owned by that family and we could have our whole family with us, and that just makes it great.”
The couple has three children – Sarah, Becca and Steven – and lives in Roseville. The Rocklin store employs 28 people.
Grocery Outlet opened Nov. 15 on Lonetree Boulevard, with a grand opening celebration planned for Saturday.
Nelda Amos of Lincoln, shopping there for the first time with daughters Isabelle and Alex, said she was impressed with the new store.
“It’s so organized, so clean, and they have very good prices,” she said.
On a tour of the store, Ralph pointed out the wide selection of bread, dairy, produce, beer and wine and household items. He explained that, thanks to Grocery Outlet’s unique buying model, the store is able to offer most of its groceries at 40-70 percent discounts.
“Our buyers in Berkeley go after the major suppliers, and whenever they’ve got a reason to sell their merchandise for less than they do to everybody else, we’ll buy it,” he said. “Whether it’s a package change, an overrun, a label that’s not quite right.”
Because of the way the deals are found, Ralph said, the store’s selection varies based on what “opportunity buys” are available.
“Because of that, we don’t always have what our customers are looking for,” he said. “But what we do have is going to be incredibly priced. So we like to say, shop us first and save more. We know you might have to go to Raley’s afterward to get something you couldn’t find, but everything you bought here, we saved you a ton of money.”
