Rocklin High senior named to youth commission

-A +A
Rocklin High School senior Isabel Lopez has been appointed to serve on the Placer County Youth Commission. Lopez, 16, became interested in the youth commission after volunteering with Full Circle Treatment Center in Roseville. “I’ve always been interested in politics,” Lopez said. “But after working with Full Circle Treatment Center, I began to realize that there are a lot of issues facing the teens in Placer County where kids have no voice.” Lopez designed and decorated the family counseling room at the drug treatment center for teens. She was surprised to learn that Full Circle Treatment Center is one of a very few drug rehabilitation options teenagers have in the Sacramento region. Lopez’s interest in politics sparked more discovery into how budgets for many prevention and support programs for Placer County youth are declining. “I’ve always been interested in prevention programs for teenagers,” Lopez said. “By working on the PCYC, I hope to share information that might support positive changes in our county. Teen issues like pregnancy, drugs, even child pornography concern me and this is my chance to speak up and make a difference.” The youth commission is made up of 15 youth members. Lopez applied for a position, was interviewed and then appointed. The PCYC’s main purpose is to provide a youth perspective to the Placer County Board of Supervisors and other policy makers on matters that affect youth in the community, as well as matters that affect the community at large. The PCYC was created to represent the interests and concerns of a broad spectrum of youth in Placer County and to seek out and promote ways to foster a healthy and positive environment for youth and families in the community. Lopez is an active honor student at Rocklin High School, where she plays on the Thunder tennis team. She will apply to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. this fall and plans a career in diplomacy. Lopez is the daughter of Jaime and Sonia Lopez of Rocklin. ~Staff report
