The Rocklin High boys volleyball team looked as if they might sweep visiting Jesuit in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Playoffs Thursday but the Marauders decided to make things interesting. After taking two of the first three games, Rocklin came out with renewed energy in game four to rally past Jesuit for a 25-21 win and the match. It meant overcoming the Marauders? momentum and an 11-5 deficit early on. Rocklin caught Jesuit at the 15-15 mark and then took it to the finish. ?When the momentum swings it?s really hard to switch it around,? Rocklin head coach John Kirk said of volleyball. ?It took a game and a half to switch it around basically.? Jesuit shook off the first two sets and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third game. The visitors went up by eight at one point before the Thunder closed the gap the three, 23-20. However, Jesuit eventually secured the victory. Unofficially, Matt Laughrea had six kills in that set and Scott Brest four blocks. ?The big thing in volleyball in order to get back you?ve got get the energy and keep talking,? said Laughrea of the final push. ?We don?t go four (games) very much; five with (Nevada Union) last week and four with Granite Bay last week is exhausting but you?ve got to fight through it.? In sets one and two Laughrea had seven kills. Setting the ball for the attacks was JT Janowski who was a steadying influence for the Thunder. Janowski, Brest and Ryan Cernik turned in 11 blocks in those first two games. ?Volleyball is kind of a game of schizophrenia, you don?t know what?s going to happen from time to time? Coach Kirk said. ?I told the team we?re going to have to earn our luck, just keep playing together. When we play as a team we?re really good.? Rocklin was scheduled to play round two in Ponderosa Tuesday. The Bruins are 20-8, 7-1 in the Delta River League. They came in as that league?s No. 1 seed, Jesuit was No. 2.
