The Rocklin Hype, a 12U girls fast pitch softball team, won the 2008 N.S.A. Western World Series as the squad went undefeated in Nevada last week. “This has been three years in the making,” Hype coach Mike Mello said. “With our core group of six girls staying together (Megan Mello, Alanna Rainer, Kayli Shaw, Autumn Powell, Keri McClintock, Ashley Sutter) and the addition of six new players (Abby Lund, Kaylee Avilla, Kaylin Mallery, Shelby Taylor, Kylee Barnes, Brynnley Eli-Tomkins) I knew we had something special.” Cali Lewis and Kendall Chambers also played for the Hype. The Hype won the title by beating the East Bay Vipers 11-1 in the championship game of the tournament that was played in Carson City. Mello pitched for Rocklin and allowed just two hits in that game. Mallery scored three runs while Rainer and Lewis scored twice each. Rocklin hammered the Elko Inferno (6-1) and the Galt Illusion (7-0) in pool play. Shaw had a double and two RBI against Elko while Sutter was dominant on the rubber against Galt. Rocklin then crushed Nevada Line Drive 13-4 as Mello, Barnes and Lewis each pitched. Taylor had a double and two RBI while Lund was 2-for-3 with two runs. The Hype also topped the So Cal PYL Fierce 6-2 as Sutter threw just 50 pitches in five innings. McClintock hit a grand slam to seal the victory. Powell (2-2, double) helped the Hype top the So Cal Westside Pride 4-0 and Rocklin then beat the previously undefeated East Bay Vipers 13-4 to gain a big advantage in the double-elimination tournament. Rainer, the catcher, doubled and drove in two runs while McClintock had a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
